Tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana, sankranti and the lunar month are calculated by the traditional Surya Siddhanta method; sunrise and sunset are the visible sunrise and sunset at the selected city. All times are in Indian Standard Time (IST). Please consult your family priest or acharya before fixing a vrat, festival or samskara.

Understand

What are the five limbs of the Panchang?

Panchang means "five limbs": tithi, vara (weekday), nakshatra, yoga and karana. In the Indian tradition the day begins at sunrise, so the tithi running at sunrise is the tithi of that day.

Tithi. Every 12 degrees of separation between the Moon and the Sun makes one tithi. A lunar month has 30 tithis: 15 in Shukla Paksha and 15 in Krishna Paksha.

Vara. The seven weekdays, Sunday to Saturday. In the Panchang the weekday is also counted from sunrise to sunrise.

Nakshatra. The lunar mansion the Moon occupies. The zodiac is divided into 27 equal parts of 13°20' each.

Yoga. Formed by adding the sidereal longitudes of the Sun and the Moon. There are 27, from Vishkambha to Vaidhriti.

Karana. Half of a tithi. There are 11 karanas: 7 movable and 4 fixed. Vishti karana is also called Bhadra.

Rahu Kaal. One of the eight parts of the daytime between sunrise and sunset, different for each weekday. By tradition, new undertakings are usually not begun during this period.

Purnimanta and Amanta months. In North India a month ends on Purnima (purnimanta); in Maharashtra, Gujarat and South India it ends on Amavasya (amanta). That is why, during Krishna Paksha, the two systems show different month names; the tithi itself stays the same.
